From 1646 onwards, the Franciscans looked after the parish of St Jakob for the German villages and the parish of St Nikolaus for the Croatian villages from their monastery in Güssing.
The parish of St. Nikolaus included the communities of: St. Nikolaus im Burgenland, Krottendorf bei Güssing, Großmürbisch, Kleinmürbisch, Hasendorf and Punitz. By decree of the governor of Styria of 29 September 1940, the parishes of St. Nikolaus and Krottendorf were incorporated into the parish of Güssing. From then on, the parish of ‘St. Nikolaus’ was called ‘St. Nikolaus in Güssing’.
By decree of the Apostolic Administrator of Burgenland dated 21 December 1945, which came into effect on 1 January 1946, the boundaries of the two parishes were redefined. The parish of St Nicholas, which has been looked after by secular priests ever since, continues to be run as the ‘parish administration of St Nicholas’ due to the lack of a suitable parish church. It includes the parishes of Großmürbisch, Kleinmürbisch, Tobaj, Punitz and Hasendorf im Burgenland.
Pastoral care is provided by a parish priest, who is based in Großmürbisch, and an assistant priest, who is based in Tobaj as an independent expository priest. The Tobaj branch comprises the parishes of Tobaj, Hasendorf and Punitz.
The parishes of Inzenhof and Tschanigraben belonged to the parish of St Emmerich in Oberradling (Hungary). When the border was drawn in 1921, Inzenhof and Tschanigraben became part of Austria. However, the faithful from these two parishes were still able to attend church in Oberradling. This became impossible when the barbed wire was erected in 1948. The two parishes were therefore looked after by the parish administration of Großmürbisch. Since the establishment of the diocese of Eisenstadt on 15 August 1960, Inzenhof and Tschanigraben have definitively belonged to the parish administration of St. Nikolaus (Großmürbisch).
The registers of the parish of St Nicholas begin with the year 1668.
